“I always believe in my creativity and my instinct on how can I bring the on screen character alive through styling”– Manish Malhotra
Clothing design has certainly been a part of Indian history and has existed in the form of traditional attires and clothing majorly designed by weavers and artisans. A major part of the clothing designs have been influenced by traditional weaves of the artisans and early designers. Up until the 1980’s clothing or fabric design existed as an occupation ,however it has transformed to a multi-billion dollar industry in the late 1980’s and the 1990’s.
Among the emerging fashion designers was one designer who had a humble beginning. Manish Malhotra was one who recognized his inner interest early on, right when started to suggest his mom with the latest trends in fashion. He was born on 5th December 1966 in Mumbai in a middle class family and his roots extend to Punjab. Though he was an average student in studies he showed a keen interest in arts, painting and sketching and he was known in his school for that.

He started off by working in a small boutique that paid him Rs.500/- per month. He then pursued his passion for designing even though his start was small. He initially started designing clothes for women but gradually started to design for men as well.

In the year 1993 he got the chance to design for Actress Sree devi for the movie Gumrah. One by one he started to become recognized and known for his designs and soon he was working with major Bollywood movies. He transitioned from a fashion designer to a costume designer in a very short span of time. Another major achievement of his was in winning the prestigious Filmfare award for his design for the actress Urmila Matindkar in the movie “Rangeela”.
